UMADAOP Lucas County

UMADAOP Lucas County serves as the “umbrella” for The Recovery Center under which other all of the other service activities are provided. The primary prevention programs are after-school and summer youth programs. Most of the youth are referred to participate in an after-school or the summer program behavioral conduct training program at UMADAOP Lucas County. The programs are evidence-based prevention services that emphasize a culturally competent, strength-based, specialized approach for program service delivery. The clients comprise a racially and ethnically diverse, customer population.

Prevention services are provided to address alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and violence prevention strategies for youth and families that reside in Toledo, Ohio and surrounding communities. The prevention services are grouped into different areas according to student grade levels, age, gender appropriateness, and prevention curriculum areas. The prevention services are open to all youth, male and female, with targeted outreach efforts conducted to engage at-risk, underserved youth and families. Curriculum-based strategies are used to teach adolescents to understand and replace aggression and antisocial behavior with positive alternatives. Topics include avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, school attendance, tardiness, respect, understanding the need to follow rules, maintain pro-social behavior, and productive classroom work and study habits.

UMADAOP Lucas County provides year-round prevention services for youth ages 6-17 years old through its Youth Programs. The goal of the prevention programs is to prevent or curb risk factors associated with harm related to ATOD use.

The prevention programs integrate three prevailing theories in drug prevention education research:

1. Risk and Protective Factors;
2. Developmental Assets; and
3. The Resiliency Model.

Scientists have found these theories are effective ways to help youth and adults that are not chemically dependent develop skills to delay or avoid using alcohol and other drugs. The youth service programs are grouped into different areas according to student grade levels, age, gender appropriateness and prevention curriculum areas. The drug prevention services are open to all youth, male and female, residing in Lucas County, however, targeted outreach efforts are conducted to engage at-risk minority youth and their family members residing in undeserved and economically disadvantaged areas.
