Preventing Suicide, Empowering Lives: How Ohio's UMADAOP Lucas County is Offering Lifesaving Initiatives to Serve the Black Community and Beyond

Ohio has multiple lifelines when it comes to mental health support and suicide prevention. The state is not just a bystander but an active participant in helping its residents find the help and support they need. One of the most critical tools in this effort is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which provides immediate, confidential support 24/7.

Ohio's 988 Lifeline: More Than Just a Number

Here in Ohio, calling, texting, or chatting with the 988 Lifeline connects you to trained specialists who offer help for various types of emotional distress, including thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crises. It's part of Ohio's broader effort to provide person-centered crisis support in communities statewide. So, when we say there's hope, and you're not alone, we mean it. The Lifeline works.

Sound the Alarm: A Call to Action for Every Ohioan

Our own "Sound the Alarm" initiative magnifies the impact of the 988 Lifeline in Ohio by making everyone aware of the signs and dangers of suicidal thoughts and mental health issues. It's a collective shout to not just hear but also respond. We're amplifying the essential work of the 988 Lifeline right here in our own backyard.

Life Is Better With You Here: Supporting Ohio's Black Community

"Life Is Better With You Here" (LIBWYH) goes a step further by focusing on Ohio's Black community. LIBWYH is designed to counter the stigma and provide a targeted, reliable resource for our Black residents who are facing unique burdens such as racism, discrimination, and limited access to mental health resources.

Spread the Love: Because Ohioans Care

We believe in the power of community. Through "Spread the Love," we're reminding everyone that emotional and practical support doesn't have to be formal—it can come from neighbors, friends, and families. When we look out for each other, that's when we see real change.

A United Force for Lifesaving Change

The 988 Lifeline, "Sound the Alarm," and LIBWYH are not isolated initiatives. They're interwoven strands in Ohio's safety net for mental health. Each enriches and extends the reach of the others, creating a robust network of care and support.

In Ohio, we're committed to sounding the alarm and spreading the love, because we know that life is truly better with you here. Let's keep lifting each other up and remember: You're never alone, especially in crisis.
